Carbon Standards International participated in the 1st Climate Summit in the Canton of Graubünden. The initiative "Climate Neutral Agriculture Graubünden" pursues the vision that Graubünden is the first canton in Switzerland where consumers can be sure when buying food from Graubünden that it has been produced in a climate neutral way. Today, the canton of Graubünden already has the highest proportion of organically producing farms in Switzerland, with 60 percent organic farmers.
Science has impressively shown that it is already 10 past 12 in terms of climate protection. The measures decided a few years ago at the climate summit in Paris limit the emission of greenhouse gases until the year 2050. According to the experts, we will have already reached this value in 6 years. The mathematical and physical models are fully developed and show by example that if we do not change anything now, we will have no more glaciers in Switzerland in a few years, with dramatic consequences for the environment, weather, society and agriculture.
The consistent application of ecological cultivation and production methods in agriculture can reduce climate gas emissions to a large extent. Scientific studies on agroecology also show that ecological systems, and in particular the move towards mixed crops, can achieve not only higher yields, but also greater yield security. Particularly when there is a lot or too little rain in a given year, mixed crops provide additional security for farmers' yields and incomes.
The cow is not a climate killer, but an important element in regenerating the soil with targeted grazing and actively promoting the build-up of humus. Ecological grazing systems thus make an active contribution to climate protection, the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and the storage of carbon in the soil. Ultimately, it is not the cow but the healthy soil that is responsible for storing the carbon in the organic matter.
Agricultural soils have huge potential to absorb and store carbon in the long term. Ecological production and cultivation systems are a prerequisite for this. |
