Methane Emission Measurements

Good day

We are pleased to inform you that we are expanding the available methods for determining the methane emissions from pyrolysis plants.

What is new?

Backed by scientific research, we now accept a range of proxy measurements, including CO readings, to help assess the methane emissions from a pyrolysis unit. This makes it significantly easier to determine the methane emission factor.

The exact regulations were published in a clarification document.

Document Methane Emission Measurements

What is the document about?

At Carbon Standards International, it is essential that the emissions from the production and processing of biochar are accounted for and offset before the C-sink is registered. We therefore require two methane measurements at the production facility (Chapter 7.3. of the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard). In addition to the direct methane measurement, we now also accept TOC, CxHy and CO measurements. We recommend that producers measure CH₄ emissions directly.
Please note that due to the inherent uncertainties of proxies, safety margins are significantly higher when CH₄ emissions are calculated from proxies rather than measured directly.

The clarification document furthermore clarifies frequently asked questions regarding methane measurements:

✅ Methane measurement strategy must be submitted in advance to Carbon Standards International for review.

✅ Two independent measurements of at least 1 hour must be conducted. It may be necessary to adapt this specification for batch systems.

✅ Next to methane, the following parameters have to be measured:
a. feedstock input flow (DM)
b. biochar output flow (DM)
c. exhaust gas volume flow
d. CO concentration

✅ Measurements should be conducted during regular operation.

What action does a biochar producer have to take?

If you produce biochar and you have no official methane emissions factor approval letter by Carbon Standard International yet, we ask that you submit measurement results that correspond to one of the options mentioned and request your approval letter accordingly.
