Technical information: Production quantities in Biochar Tool

Dear ,

To ensure that processes run smoothly, it is essential that you book Production Quantities (Stocks) quarterly in the Biochar Tool.

The Biochar Tool has been updated and now reflects the emissions portfolio introduced with the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard. We have informed about this change in a previous newsletter:

Information on the Biochar Tool Newsletter

This update allows C-sinks to be issued continuously throughout the year, rather than only at fixed intervals. To make this work, data needs to be reported on a regular basis. We therefore ask all producers to provide their biochar production volumes at least quarterly by entering the actual quantities in the “Stock / Production quantities” section of the Biochar Tool. You can book Production quantities daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Production quantities can be added across month-ends (e.g. January 31–February 3, 2026), but may not exceed a quarter (e.g. March 28–April 4, 2026). Entries for the past quarter must be made by the 15th of the following month at the latest. For batches that are already active, you can make entries retroactively.

Please record your entire production, including Biochar that does not meet the batch criteria. Biochar that does not meet the batch criteria, must be marked as such (see screenshot).

How to add Production quantities / stock?

1: Navigate to the “Stock / Production quantities” section in the Biochar Tool.
2: Click on the “Add stock” button
3: Fill the necessary data.
Optional: Use the checkbox at the button to mark it as maintenance biochar if necessary.

The Stock entries are listed in the emission portfolio after successful batch certification. The certification body will cross-check the production volumes and emissions generated during the next audit. These stock entries also serve as the basis for calculating label fees.

Batch closure info:

Once the batch run time has ended, the batch must be closed, and the total produced biochar quantities must be reported via the batch closure info again (Screenshot below). All recorded quantities in stock must correspond accurately to the data provided in the batch closure info.

As always, we are happy to answer any questions you may have.
