Public Consultation - Global Biochar C-Sink - Version 4.0

Dear ,

Carbon Standards International continues to focus on innovation. We are excited to announce the release of the new version of the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard.

See the new version here.

The key achievements are:

  • Integration of persistence evaluation with Random Reflectance or HyPy (chapter 3) and introduction of the new highest persistence class with a geological persistent carbon (GPC) content of 90%. Read more details on our blog.
  • Improving the various roles involved in a biochar C-Sink project: The C-Sink Matrix Provider is being introduced for all those who exclusively incorporate biochar into a product. Previously, these parties were required to obtain certification as EBC processors. For those who are not interested in labeling their products with the EBC logo, the C-Sink Matrix Provider offers a well-structured alternative.

Along with a few other minor changes, the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard has now been brought up to date.

Process

The standard is now open for public consultation for 30 days, until April 30th 2026. Comments can be submitted via this form:

Standard amendment form

After the closure of the public consultation and the evaluation of the feedback, Carbon Standards International publishes the feedback with structured responses (accepted/not accepted, justification). Individual comments are not attributed to specific individuals. Based on this review, the final version of the Standard is published.

Over the next few weeks, we will reach out to our existing customers to explain the significance of these changes and describe what they need to do to benefit from the new rules.

We are planning a webinar on the update one week before the public consultation ends on April 23rd, 2026, at 1pm CET.

Please register here.

We look forward to your feedback and to officially launch the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard Version 4.0.
