Strengthening the Artisan C-Sink: Public Consultation on dry matter analysis

The Artisan C-Sink combines simple, widely available technology with rigorous monitoring to generate secure and trustworthy C-Sinks. As our most successful standard, it is currently undergoing a revision aimed at making it even more robust and reliable. Our guiding principle remains unchanged: to take the most practical approach that still delivers the level of precision required for high-integrity carbon removal.

We are pleased to announce the first of two public consultations regarding the upcoming release of the new Global Artisan C-Sink Standard, focusing on a critical technical advancement: the introduction of a standardized protocol for assessing biochar production quantities.

At its core, it is a practical method for determining biochar dry matter directly in the field.

The key features are:

• Direct Field Calibration: A statistically valid method to calibrate volumetric or wet-basis mass measurements against dry matter determination.
• High-Frequency Updates: To account for natural fluctuations in production, the method mandates frequent calibration, ensuring that reported values are always a true reflection of the biochar produced.
• Enhanced Precision: The integration of thermogravimetric moisture analyzers as a core requirement to ensure the highest accuracy in dry-weight assessment.

These improvements are key to building long-term trust - providing project-specific, high-precision bulk density data and corresponding production quantities that stakeholders can rely on with confidence.

The subject area is now open for public consultation for 30 days, until May 10th 2026. Comments can be submitted via this form:

After the closure of the public consultation and the evaluation of the feedback, Carbon Standards International publishes the feedback with structured responses (accepted/not accepted, justification). Individual comments are not attributed to specific individuals. Based on this review and under consideration of the upcoming public consultation on feedstock moisture determination, the final version of the Standard will be prepared and published.

Over the next few weeks, we will reach out to our existing customers to explain the significance of these changes.

We are planning a webinar on the update one week before the public consultation ends on April 30st, 2026, at 1pm CET. During the webinar, participants will also have the opportunity to provide comments regarding the document.
