News from Carbon Standards International

Dear

We hope you and your team are doing well. As we move towards the summer season, we are pleased to share the latest updates, developments, and insights from Carbon Standards International in our latest newsletter.

Carbon Standards International Strategic Update, external endorsements:

In 2026 the International Voluntary Market is influenced by two organisations: the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Carbon Standards applied for both and is currently in the assessment cycle.

CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation)

Carbon Standards International is proud to announce that our application is already in the assessment cycle for 2026 by the ICAO Technical Advisory Body (TAB). Our application can be viewed on the website:

Technical Advisory Body (TAB)

ICVCM (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market)

We have also applied for the recognition of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). The assessment determines its alignment with the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs). It provides details on governance and criterias including sustainable development provisions, transparency and a robust third party validation and verification.

We have submitted our application and the check has been completed. Our application is now under review. Once the government board has approved it, they will start assessing the standards.

The Integrity Council Chair Annette Nazareth says: “We're delighted that Carbon Standards International recognises the value of high-integrity carbon credits and has applied for our science-based Core Carbon Principles (CCP) assessment. We encourage carbon crediting programs to join us in building trust in the Carbon Market. By undergoing our rigorous assessment process, programs meeting our CCP criteria can use the CCP label by issuing credits under CCP-Approved methodologies, a mark of excellence for high-quality carbon credits."

CRCF (carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage)

CRCF is a voluntary framework in the EU for certifying carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage, aiming to enhance climate neutrality efforts by 2050. This requires both a rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and the removal of any remaining, unavoidable emissions from the atmosphere.

Standard Owners (Certification schemes) play a key role in ensuring carbon removals and soil emission reductions are robust, credible, and durable, while also supporting broader sustainability objectives – including the promotion of biodiversity.

By granting recognition, the Commission confirms that a certification scheme complies with the relevant CRCF certification methodologies and the minimum requirements set out in the Implementing Regulation 2025/2358.

Implementing Regulation 2025/2358

The implementation of the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) guidelines in the EU has been started. We are preparing everything for the recognition as a certification scheme (standard owner) for CRCF. The delegated acts for permanent carbon removal have been published, so we will apply for our Global Biochar C-Sink standard.

For instance, these rules require certification schemes to:

  • have a robust and transparent governance, and effective internal monitoring system
  • require operators to apply the relevant CRCF certification methodologies
  • require operators to be audited regularly by accredited or recognised certification bodies
  • operate reliable certification registries that prevent double counting and ensure the traceability of certificates throughout their lifecycle

The CRCF methodology for carbon storage in buildings is not ready yet and will be published at the beginning of next year. We will apply for the Global Construction C-Sink standard at the beginning of next year.

„Our goal is to offer our customers the best possible standards and operational processes“ says Ueli Steiner, CEO of Carbon Standards International.

Carbon Standards International Joins Biochar Summit 2026 as Diamond Sponsor

Carbon Standards International is proud to be a Diamond Sponsor of Biochar Summit 2026 in Vienna. As the biochar industry scales rapidly, rigorous certification has never been more important. Carbon Standards International provides the frameworks that turn climate ambition into verifiable action - from feedstock to verified carbon credits.

Join us in Vienna this June. Attend our keynote session and visit the Carbon Standards International booth to explore what credible biochar CDR looks like at scale.

Carbon Standards International at Carbon Unbound East Coast

Carbon Standards International hosted a Breakfast Briefing at Carbon Unbound East Coast, bringing together leaders from Terraton, Varaha, and Valorize Systems for a discussion on the growing role of CDR insetting in consumer supply chains.

Over specialty coffee and single-origin chocolate, participants explored how carbon removal is increasingly connecting with consumer products and why insetting represents one of the most promising emerging demand signals in the carbon removal market.

The session sparked engaging conversations around practical implementation, market opportunities, and the future of high-integrity carbon removal in everyday supply chains.

First Construction C-Sink Manager Training Successfully Completed

We are pleased to announce that the first Construction C-Sink Manager training course was successfully held on May 7 in collaboration with OPENLY. The training brought together participants interested in registering buildings as C-sinks and seeking endorsement as future C-Sink Managers.

The training covered topics such as carbon markets, regulatory frameworks, the basics of life cycle assessment (LCA) in construction, the Global Construction C-Sink Standard, and the use of the Construction Tool. Participant feedback was very positive and demonstrated the growing interest in carbon-storing building materials and certified C-sinks at the building-level.

The discussions and practical feedback also provided valuable insights for the further development of the Global Construction C-Sink ecosystem, particularly regarding future certification and market approaches for insetting and offsetting projects.

Due to the positive feedback and rising demand, the next C-Sink Manager training is planned for Q3/Q4 of this year – depending on participant interest. Interested companies and professionals are welcome to contact Carbon Standards International to receive further information on the registration process.
