Today we are introducing our new brand – Carbon Standards – and we wanted you to be among the first to see it.

When the European Biochar Certificate was first introduced in 2012, the carbon market was just emerging and there was no established benchmark for what rigorous biochar certification looked like. It has been built carefully and with rigor, updated and expanded as our scientific knowledge has grown. Since its inception, Carbon Standards has also evolved in many ways.

Today our standards and registry infrastructure support over 290 certified partner organizations across 50 countries. With over 800,000 tCO₂e in carbon credits issued, biochar carbon removal at Carbon Standards has moved from a promising pilot solution to a certified, auditable climate asset.

Our new brand reflects that reality. The name is simpler. The mark is sharper. Two letters, C and S, in one distinctive symbol with forest green at the top for the natural world – biomass, feedstock, living systems – and charcoal at the base, where carbon becomes fixed: sequestered, stable, measurable.

What doesn't change is what the brand stands for: rigor that isn't incidental, but structural – built into our governance, our methodology, our independence from investor pressure. That's the foundation that the European Biochar Certificate, the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard, the Artisan C-Sink Standard and our other standards are built on, and it's what our certification work continues to build toward.

None of this would have been possible without you. The producers who brought their operations to certification. The traders, managers and dMRV partners who built the infrastructure around them. The laboratories and auditors who ensure the accuracy of the science. You are the reason CDR has the credibility it has today. Thank you for being part of it.

Carbon Standards Prepares to Submit CRCF Application: A Milestone Toward EU Recognition 

This August, Carbon Standards will submit its application for recognition under the EU's Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation – a significant step in our accreditation roadmap. 

The CRCF Framework's permanence and monitoring requirements align closely with methodology CS has applied for years through the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard and European Biochar Certificate (EBC). Our application builds directly on this existing rigor.

On the technical side, our systems are fully equipped to track biochar in accordance with CRCF requirements all the way to its final agricultural destination. The CRCF thresholds for toxic substances and the permitted applications correspond exactly to those we specify in the EBC certification classes and the corresponding permitted matrices.

For our clients who manufacture and use their biochar products in Europe, the practical aspect is clear: certification under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard or EBC already positions you for CRCF compliance once recognition is granted – no separate certification process needed. 

That means clients working with Carbon Standards today are building on a foundation ready for the EU's regulatory framework, providing a head start as the market shifts toward CRCF-aligned carbon removals. 

Message from our CEO

I still remember the conversations that started it all.

In 2021 the carbon removal sector was just beginning to take shape. Biochar was promising, but still a niche topic. We knew that if this industry was going to earn trust, it would need something more than ambition. It would need robust standards, scientific credibility and certification systems that could scale globally.

That vision led to the creation of Carbon Standards.

Built together with the EASY-CERT group, the Ithaka Institute and the European Biochar Industry Consortium, our goal was clear: provide the foundation that would allow the biochar and carbon removal sector to grow with integrity.

Five years later, we have evolved in many ways and our new brand reflects that evolution.

What began with the stewardship of the European Biochar Certificate has grown into a global organization working with over 290 certified partners across more than 50 countries, shaping the future of durable carbon removal.

But what makes me proud is not just the numbers.

It is seeing a sector mature from an emerging idea into a rapidly growing global movement. Watching project developers, farmers, technology providers, researchers and policymakers work together to turn carbon removal into something measurable, transparent and trustworthy.

And we are only getting started.

The next chapter will be about scaling durable carbon removal responsibly - without compromising scientific rigour, environmental integrity or transparency.
