Carbon Standards Submits CRCF Recognition Application to the European Commission

Carbon Standards has submitted its application to the European Commission for recognition under the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF) as a certification scheme, including the "Permanent Carbon Removal" biochar carbon removal methodology.

This application builds on our years of experience developing standards and methodologies for biochar certification – covering both biochar as a product and as a carbon removal (C-Sink) credit. Recognition under the CRCF would formally position Carbon Standards' methodology within the EU's regulatory framework for carbon removals, reinforcing the rigor and traceability our certification has been built on since we took over EBC certification in 2021.

The application is currently under review by the European Commission. We'll share updates as the process progresses.

New Standard Open for Public Consultation: EU Biochar Carbon Removal (EU BCR) Standard

Building on our years of experience developing biochar certification methodologies, we're introducing a new standard: the EU Biochar Carbon Removal Standard (EU BCR) – a certification methodology for permanent carbon removals generated by biochar carbon removal activities, compliant with the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/3012).

Projects currently certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard can add EU BCR certification, giving them a pathway tailored specifically to CRCF requirements – including feedstock limitations, tracking to the C-Sink site for soil application, and mandatory EBC certification of the biochar used. With EU BCR, Carbon Standards offers clients certification of credits directly comparable to other CRCF credits, alongside our well-established Global Biochar C-Sink Standard.

The standard is now open for public consultation until 24 September 2026. We welcome your feedback via the standard amendment form below. After consultation closes, we'll publish the feedback received, our response to each point, and the final version of the standard.

Where Standards Meet Practice: The Tangible Impact of Construction C-Sinks 

What does a Construction C-Sink look like in practice? 

Robin Werren, PM Global Construction C-Sink, recently visited the hempcrete production site of Cancret in Widnau, Switzerland. The visit offered a first-hand look at how hemp-based building materials are produced and how biogenic carbon storage can be integrated into construction. 

Cancret develops prefabricated wall systems using hempcrete, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of conventional construction materials. Industrial hemp absorbs CO₂ as it grows, storing carbon within its biomass. Once processed into hempcrete and built into walls, this carbon remains stored long-term - and thanks to the wall system design, ready for re-use. 

Robin followed the process from raw hemp through mixing and processing to the finished wall elements, gaining valuable insight into how the Global Construction C-Sink Standard translates into real-world application. 

For Carbon Standards, visits like this matter: strong science-based Standards provide the framework for credible climate action, but it is projects like Cancret’s that turn those requirements into tangible impact.
