Extension of transition period from EBC C-Sink to Global Biochar C-Sink until June 1, 2025

Good day ,

the transition period for the application of the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard will be extended by 3 months, until June 1, 2025. We would like to apologize for the short notice of this announcement and any resulting inconvenience.

We have received feedback in recent weeks and increasingly in the last few days that there is uncertainty regarding the March 1, 2025 deadline for C-Sink (CINK) registration in the registry. This has prompted us to extend the transition period for the validity of the EBC C-Sink Standard by 3 months.

The deadlines communicated in the newsletter on December 16, 2024 will also be postponed by 3 months.

What does this mean?

If no validated Project Design Document (PDD) is available after June 1, 2025, no C-sinks (CINKs) can be registered for the time being. EBC C-Sink Potential Certificates from before June 1, 2025 remain valid and can be used for the calculation of C-Sink Certificates (CINKs) according to the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard as soon as the project documentation is available.

We would like to take this opportunity to go into more detail:

• The production and distribution of biochar with C-Sink potential can continue regularly and is not affected by the regulations. Global Biochar C-Sink potential attestations are issued based on a batch. This does not necessarily require a validated PDD.
• From June 1, 2025, only C-Sink certificates (CINKs) will be issued in accordance with the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard. The EBC C-Sink potential certificate is recognized as the basis for calculation. A prerequisite for a C-Sink (CINK) according to the Global Biochar C-Sink is a validated Global Biochar C-Sink PDD from the biochar producer.
• The decisive factor here is the date of receipt of the application to register a C-Sink (CINK). For projects in the transition period, requests received in the Global C-Sink Tool (through your MRV provider) until May 31, 2025 23:59 CET can be considered under the EBC C-Sink Standard. As of June 1, 2025, a validated Global Biochar C-Sink PDD will be required for the issuance of C-Sink Certificates (CINKs).
• The registration of a C-Sink (CINK) requires the recording and offsetting of processing emissions.

If you have not yet submitted a Global Biochar C-Sink PDD, we kindly ask you to do so without delay. Please keep in mind that validation takes time.
